The PFW visit Belgium

Hi all, I thought you would be interested in the PFW’s recent visit to Belgium.

On arrival Thursday night at a local pool club “Magic 8 Ball” for a knock, the players  of Mons made us very welcome, almost all of the locals were challenging everyone to a frame, probably checking out the foreign competition no doubt.
Fantastic friendly start to what proved a long yet successful trip.

003.JPGPlay commenced proper at a sports hall just outside Mons, at which had been converted to our venue for the weekend, the main elements were there, Bar, Food and 24 pool tables.

With 3 events over the weekend, singles, 4 man team and international friendly there was plenty of pool going on.

All the Welsh squad made it through to the last 16 in the singles, before knocking each other out one by one, Russell defeating Paul Penhale and Kyle Edwards the Oly Bale, and Wayne Smith knocking out Paul Hawkins ,before meeting each other in the final, Wayne Smith V Russell Burgess were to battle it out and no surprise it went all the way… to the decider where Russell became victorious 7-6 taking the Belgium open crown for the first time. 008.JPG
The 4 man event was once again dominated by a strong side of Wayne Smith, Russell Burgess, Oly Bale and Paul Hawkins never looking like losing in the group stages and coasting right through to the aforementioned Magic 8 Ball team in the final.
Wales A, team went about their business as usual, however this time the local team battled hard and forced a 3 man playoff, showing their class team Wales won through to win the play off 2-1 at 2.15 am on Sunday morning. 005.JPG

Internationals took place across the weekend with 3 sessions of 18 frames ( 3 x 6 ), with Team Wales taking the first two sessions comfortably, however on the final session this was not the case, Belgium had strengthened their  side with a number of players not available earlier in the weekend. At 7 all it looked dangerous but with finishes from Paul Hawkins and a steady performance from Paul Penhale, Wales came through 9-7 winners.
Wales would like to extend a big thank you to all those that took part and especially the organisers who made our stay welcoming and warm throughout including transporting us around, and the especially the Belgium Federation led by David Verey and TiTi for all the translations and hard work put to get the event off the ground.

PFW Statement

As many of you may be aware the Welsh Pool Association (WPA) and the Pool Federation of Wales (PFW) have recently parted company after trying to uniform the sport in Wales.

Our aim was to deliver competitive pool competitions for all Welsh players at any rule set and to have a clear structure for players to represent their country at any rule set. This however did not happen and as a direct result the PFW and WPA decided to go their own way again.

However we the PFW feel a number of concerns need to be raised after our involvement with the WPA.

It was quite clear towards the end of our time together that it was never going to work. The main reason was due to the WPA not having the vision or expertise to deliver on many levels. They simply did what they wanted to do and used others as an excuse to why development did not take place.

From a financial point of view the PFW are considerably out of pocket after this venture due to the WPA not committing to fulfill events such as the Anglo Welsh Cup and recent European championships in Ireland. Some players did attend but at a great expense.

The much publicised missing money from Trecco bay 2010 has rumbled on with no end in sight, so today the PFW have decided to write this money off as a lost cause. In doing so we have decided to release the £520 from the North Wales Tour fund and will be credited into the WPA account next week. This money was being held until such time that the WPA / Team BBC would also release the money owed. Paul Bushnell informed the PFW yesterday in person that he was not going to release the money to the PFW.

However, the much trusted Team BBC, who are used by the WPA to run most of their events has pocketed in excess of approx: £1000 on the back of the PFW bringing over 70 players to the festival. I will leave you to decide how that looks but they are the facts.

As a final comment we wish the WPA and all its members the very best of luck at future events.
